CREATION MYTH OF JAPAN

The first gods summoned two divine creatures into existence, the male Izanagi and the female Izanami, and they commissioned the creation of the first land. To help them do this, they gave Izanagi and Izanami a spear decorated with jewels, named Amenonuhoko (spear of heaven). Then, the two deities were the bridge between Heaven and Earth, Amenoukihashi (floating bridge of heaven) and stirred the ocean with the spear. When drops of salty water fell from the tip of the spear, formed the island Onogoro (self-made).

They descended from the bridge of heaven and made their home on the island. Since we wanted to join a pillar called Amenomihashira built around it and built a palace called Yahirodono (room whose area is 8 arms). Izanagi and Izanami circled the pillar in opposite directions, and when they met, Izanami, the female deity, spoke first with a greeting. Izanagi thought this was not the proper way, however they joined anyway. They had two children, Hiruko (infant water) and Awashima (island of bubbles) but were poorly made and not considered gods.

They put the children on a boat and sailed the sea. Then they were asked the other gods a response to what they did wrong. They said that the male god should have initiated the conversation during the marriage ceremony. So Izanagi and Izanami went around the pillar again, and this time, when they met, Izanagi spoke first and their marriage was successful.

From this union were born ohoyashima, or the eight major islands of the Japanese chain
